La primera edición publicada por Gente fue publicada en mayo de 1958. En la portada aparecía Gladys Zender, la primera Miss Universo peruana. Ese mismo año, el presidente Nixon hizo una visita a Perú, por lo cual la revista toco esta actividad.

Gente was founded with the purpose of addressing and showing the life of the public figures of Peru and the world, as well as current events of national and international relevance. In its editions, the magazine presented a theme different from the competition that used graphic elements for the world, in addition to having attractive covers. In these appear models and celebrities of the moment.

The magazine was gaining popularity for covering and performing various beauty contests. Among these, the “Gente girl of the year” and the “Gente Awards” that were implemented later became very popular.

Isabel Rengifo, a peruvian journalist who has had a long journey in her career and in the media, says:

The magazine people, for the years in which it circulated, was a reference for journalistic information proper. As well it was a kind of magazine in which you could browse all the themes of work of Peru and the world. It had social, political, police, world, entertainment, etc. sections. That is to say, it was almost obligatory to read because the reader knew in which page he will find what interested him.

The interviews that Gente carried out were of great interest on conjunctural issues of any court. Personally, I felt sorry that the magazine stopped circulating due to the time and demands of the competition. I still miss this magazine, since the name brings me back to that nice feeling of having all the offer of themes that I mentioned before. If they return in another format, there would be no doubt that I would continue reading it.
